Ornamental iron behaves differently here than in a wet climate. Rust is far less of a problem in dry desert air, so the failure mode is not corrosion but ultraviolet degradation of the finish — powder coating chalks and fades on the sun-facing side, and it is the coating rather than the steel that determines how long the fence looks new. Dark colors also become extremely hot to touch in summer.
