Traditional mattresses shipped as they were built: full-size, in a truck, occupying volume out of all proportion to their weight, which made freight the dominant cost of getting a bed to a customer and made a large showroom-and-warehouse footprint close to mandatory. Roll-packing changed that. A foam or hybrid mattress is compressed under vacuum, rolled and boxed, reducing it to a fraction of its volume and allowing it to travel as a parcel through ordinary carriers, up staircases and through doorways that a rigid mattress could not pass.

A compressed mattress needs time to recover. Once unboxed it expands quickly at first and continues to reach full loft over a period the manufacturer states, typically counted in hours to a couple of days, and it should be lying flat and unweighted while it does. New foam also releases residual manufacturing odor as it expands - off-gassing - which dissipates with ventilation over a few days and is normal rather than a fault. Sleeping on a bed that has not fully expanded gives a misleading impression of both firmness and support, which is worth remembering before forming a judgment in the first night or two.
