How it works

Color matching is the part of the job that customers judge and the part the desert makes hardest. A paint code is a starting point rather than an answer, because manufacturers run variants within a single code across plants and production runs. Then ultraviolet light gets to work: on a car that has spent years parked outside in southern Utah, the roof, the hood and the upper surfaces have shifted measurably while the doors and lower panels, shaded for much of the day, have not. Matching a new panel to the factory code produces something that is technically correct and visibly wrong. The working answer is to spray test cards and check them against the actual vehicle in daylight, and then to blend the new paint out into the adjacent panels so that the eye never meets a hard edge between old and new.
