Safelite AutoGlass

Safelite AutoGlass operates from North Mall Drive and does windshield repair and replacement both in the shop and at the customer's location, together with recalibration of the driver-assistance systems that depend on the glass. That second service used to be a specialist add-on and is now, on most vehicles built in the last decade, simply part of replacing a windshield.

Context

On most modern vehicles the forward-facing camera that runs lane-keeping, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control is mounted to the windshield itself, looking out through a specified area of glass with a specified optical quality. Replace the glass and the camera has moved — perhaps by a fraction of a degree, which sounds trivial until you consider that the aim is being projected a few hundred feet down the road, where a fraction of a degree becomes feet of lateral error and the system starts reading the wrong lane. Recalibration restores it, and there are two methods. Static calibration parks the vehicle on a level floor at a measured distance from a printed target board and lets the system re-learn its reference. Dynamic calibration drives a prescribed route at a set speed on clearly marked road while the system re-references the world. Some vehicles require one, some the other, some both — and it is specified by the manufacturer rather than chosen by the shop.
