Snelgrove was founded in Salt Lake City in 1929 by Charles Rich Snelgrove, who set out to make ice cream an affordable luxury in the middle of the Depression. Its Sugar House flagship carried a forty-foot neon sign with a spinning double cone and became a genuine city landmark. The family ran it until about 1990; the brand later passed to Dreyer's, which discontinued it in 2008, and it has since been revived by a descendant of the founding family.
Context
The Snelgrove sign in Sugar House — cursive neon and a revolving double cone, art deco building beneath it — was a Salt Lake landmark for decades before the building came down in 2021. The brand's path from family firm to national owner to discontinuation to revival is a fairly common arc for regional food names, though few of them get the last step.
