Style by Design is a residential interior design studio in St. George founded in 2018. Color selection is where clients most often go wrong on their own, and the reason is specific to this place: the light here is unlike the light in the showroom, the catalog or the house they moved from.
Context
Color is not a property of a surface but of the light reflecting off it. Southern Utah's light is intense, comes from a high sun angle for much of the year, and arrives through very clear air, so it is strong and only lightly diffused. It also arrives having bounced off red rock, red soil and sunlit stucco, which tints it warm before it ever reaches an interior wall. A gray chosen from a chip under fluorescent light in a store reads noticeably warmer once it is on a wall in a room with a west-facing window.
Orientation splits a house into different rooms for this purpose. North-facing rooms receive indirect light all day and read cooler and steadier; south and west rooms take direct sun that shifts markedly from morning to evening and pushes warm; east rooms are bright early and flat later. This is why the working method is to paint large samples - a couple of feet square, on more than one wall of the room - and look at them in the morning, in the afternoon and under the room's own lamps at night, rather than deciding from a chip held against a swatch. Undertone is what shifts: two grays that look identical on a card separate into one green and one violet on a wall, and it is undertone rather than value that determines whether a scheme holds together.
