Community Center Park, Hurricane

Add to calendar

Fall Fest is Hurricane's free community Halloween party, held at Community Center Park on the Saturday before the holiday. It is aimed squarely at families with young children.

What is there

The core of it is a trunk-or-treat — residents decorate car trunks around the park and hand out candy from them, which is how a great deal of trick-or-treating in this region actually happens. Around that sit bounce houses, food trucks, a kids' market where children sell their own goods, a magic show and live entertainment.

Everything except the food is free.

Why trunk-or-treat is the local default

In a valley of large, spread-out subdivisions with long blocks and few sidewalks connecting them, door-to-door trick-or-treating is harder work than it is in an older grid city. Parking cars in a circle and letting children move between them solves that in one move, and Washington County adopted it early and thoroughly.

Knowing that explains why almost every city and church in the region runs one, and why a newcomer's first Halloween here can feel oddly quiet on the residential streets.

Where it sits in the Halloween week

Washington County spreads Halloween across the whole week rather than concentrating it on the night. City festivals, church trunk-or-treats and school parties fill the preceding weekend, and the 31st itself is often the quietest part of it for young families who have already been out three times.

For a visitor that is worth knowing in both directions: arriving on Halloween expecting the main event will underwhelm, and arriving the weekend before without checking will run into a full calendar.

Practical

  • It runs late afternoon into the evening, so the trunk-or-treat portion falls after dark for the older children and before it for the youngest.
  • Costumes are the norm, for adults as well.
  • Bring cash for the food trucks and the kids' market.
  • Community Center Park is in central Hurricane, a short walk from the city offices.

The Neon Night Run runs the evening before at the other end of town, which makes a weekend of it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hurricane Fall Fest free?

Yes. Nothing at the festival charges admission, and the only money you will spend is on whatever you choose to eat or buy from the children selling things.

What is a trunk-or-treat?

Residents park in a circle, decorate their open trunks and hand out candy from them, so children move between cars instead of between houses. It is the dominant form of trick-or-treating in this region.

Why is trunk-or-treat so common in southern Utah?

The subdivisions are large and spread out with long blocks and few connecting sidewalks, which makes door-to-door slow going. Gathering the candy in one parking lot solves that, and nearly every city and congregation here runs one.

What ages does Fall Fest suit?

Young families above all. The bounce houses, magic show and kids' market are pitched at primary-school age and below.

When does it happen?

The Saturday before Halloween, running from mid-afternoon into the evening so both the youngest children and older ones get a workable slot.
