Snow Canyon Half Marathon

A net-downhill half marathon run entirely inside Snow Canyon State Park, with the 10K and 5K starting farther down the same course and finishing alongside it. St. George City Races has organized the race since 2007, making it a younger sibling of the organization's marquee event, the St. George Marathon, though the two run more than a month apart on separate courses. In 2013, Runner's World named the Snow Canyon course one of the country's best half marathons after collecting reader feedback nationwide, citing its run beneath red-and-white sandstone cliffs and across the black lava field that also holds Snow Canyon's lava tubes near the finish. The race grew sharply the year after that recognition and has since drawn fields of more than 3,000 finishers.

A Net-Downhill Course Through the Park

The half marathon drops roughly 1,800 feet from start to finish against only about 175 feet of climb, for a net descent close to 1,600 feet over 13.1 miles — the kind of profile that can hand a runner a personal-best time well ahead of anything they have run in training. That speed has a cost a flat road race doesn't: downhill running loads the quadriceps eccentrically with every stride, absorbing impact instead of just producing it, and by the later miles that adds up to burning, unsteady legs no amount of flat-course fitness prepares for. Runners who treat the descent as free speed instead of training on downhill grades beforehand tend to fade hardest through the steepest early miles, right when the pace feels easiest.

The 10K, 5K, and Fun Run

The 10K starts inside the park, farther down the half marathon's route, and merges onto the same course to share its finish. The 5K instead begins on the Lava Flow Trail around Snow Canyon High School before joining the longer courses for its final mile. A separate, later Fun Run Walk N' Roll — a one-mile option plus a shorter kids' distance — runs as its own event rather than joining the timed races.

Getting to the Start, and Where to Watch

None of the start lines are reachable by car. Every runner rides a bus from the back lot of Snow Canyon High School, and the race does not allow drop-offs at any start. The state park itself closes to public vehicle traffic for several hours on race morning while the buses run, so anyone hoping to drive in and watch from an overlook inside the canyon has to wait for the closure to lift. The finish, back near the high school, is the practical place to watch instead of trying to reach a viewpoint inside the closed canyon.

Runners who want to see the canyon on their own terms rather than through a bus window can preview the terrain beforehand, whether that means camping inside Snow Canyon State Park or simply driving the course grade to feel out the descent. November's cooler mornings make those steep miles easier on the legs than a summer visit here would be, and the timing lands squarely in the region's best stretch for outdoor training.

Where It Sits in the Local Calendar

The Snow Canyon Half Marathon runs in mid-November, a little over a month after St. George City Races' bigger event, the October marathon. A runner deciding between the two is choosing between a shorter, faster, single-park course here and a longer, bigger-field road race there. The town of Ivins, home to the park's south entrance, borders the canyon the half marathon starts inside.
