Virgin River Half Marathon

A Half Marathon That Never Touches a Road

The Virgin River Half is run on St. George's paved trail network along the Virgin River, starting and finishing at the Dixie Convention Center. That is the distinguishing feature and the reason to choose it: no road closures to work around, no traffic, and no long exposed highway section. Just the trail system that threads the city along its river.

Alongside the half there is a 10K, a 5K, and a fun run at 200 meters and a mile for children, all from the same start and finish. Because everything converges on one building, families can enter different distances and still see each other at both ends of the morning.

The February Case

Mid-February is one of the best running windows of the year in this valley. It is cool enough that a half marathon is comfortable rather than an exercise in heat management, and dry enough that the trails are reliably runnable — which is exactly when northern Utah is not.

That combination is why the county's race calendar is at its densest between December and May, and why visiting runners increasingly treat southern Utah as a winter training destination rather than a summer one.

The Practical Shape of the Morning

The half carries a time limit of three and a half hours, which works out at about a sixteen-minute mile — generous enough to walk a good portion of it and still finish inside the cutoff. That matters, because the flat paved profile makes this a realistic first half marathon.

Starting and Finishing in One Building

Using the convention center as the base solves the problem that makes February races unpleasant elsewhere: there is somewhere warm to wait. Bag drop, restrooms, and the finish are all in one place, and you are not standing in a field at eight in the morning in a trash bag.

Parking is on site. For a race this size that removes most of the logistical friction — you park once, and you finish where your car is.

Who It Suits

First-time half marathoners, anyone who prefers trails to road, families entering across several distances, and visitors building a winter running trip. The same riverside trail system hosts the Last One Standing Ultra in December, and for anyone chasing a bigger February target, the Zion Half Marathon runs two weeks later up the Zion corridor on an entirely different kind of course.

Frequently asked questions

How much climbing is there?

Very little. The riverside trail system is close to flat for the whole distance, which combined with the surface makes this one of the more forgiving half marathons in the region — and a realistic target for a first one.

Is it a good first half marathon?

About as good as they get locally. There is almost no elevation to contend with, the footing is predictable, and the cutoff is loose enough to accommodate a run-walk strategy from start to finish.

What other distances are there?

A 10K, a 5K, and a children's fun run at 200 meters and a mile. All start and finish at the same place, staggered across the morning, so a family can enter different distances and still be together at the start and the finish.

How is the course supported?

Aid stations roughly every two to three miles, with water and sports drink throughout and gel at some of them. The half sets off first, with the shorter races following in staggered starts.

Is there anywhere warm to wait before the start?

Yes, and it is the quiet advantage of this race. Everything is based inside the convention center — bag drop, restrooms, the finish — so you are not standing in a field in February waiting for a start gun. Parking is on site.

Is February good running weather in St. George?

It is among the best of the year here. Cool enough that heat is not a factor, dry enough that the trails run reliably. It is precisely the window when running in northern Utah is difficult, which is why the county's race calendar is at its densest between December and May.
