The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is the quiet, high, forested side of the canyon — and at about 2.5 to 3 hours from St. George, it's far closer than the crowded South Rim. It's a long but rewarding day trip.
What to see
- Bright Angel Point: a short, dramatic walk to a knife-edge viewpoint near the lodge
- Grand Canyon Lodge: a historic stone-and-timber lodge with a view-filled terrace
- Cape Royal and Point Imperial: scenic drives to the highest and some of the best viewpoints on either rim
Important: it's seasonal
- The North Rim is only open roughly mid-May through mid-October — the road closes with winter snow
- At 8,000+ feet, it's cool and green, a world apart from the desert below
- Services are limited; fuel up and pack food and water
Tips: start early — it's a long drive each way. Fall is gorgeous and uncrowded. Always check the current opening dates before you go.
