Most visitors never see Kolob Canyons, the quiet northwest corner of Zion National Park — which is exactly why locals love it. It has its own entrance right off I-15 (Exit 40), about 40 minutes from St. George, and rarely feels crowded.
What to do
- Kolob Canyons Road: a 5-mile scenic drive climbing into a wall of crimson finger canyons, ending at the Timber Creek Overlook
- Timber Creek Overlook Trail: a short, easy 1-mile round trip to a big view
- Taylor Creek Trail: ~5 miles round trip past historic homestead cabins to the Double Arch Alcove
- Kolob Arch: one of the world's largest natural arches, via a long day hike or backpack up La Verkin Creek
Tips
- You'll need a Zion or America the Beautiful pass — it's the same park, just a different entrance
- The higher elevation makes it cooler than the main canyon — a relief when St. George is baking
- Sunset sets the red cliffs on fire; bring a camera
It's the easiest way to feel like you have Zion to yourself.
