For a few weeks each spring, the desert around St. George does something it doesn't do the rest of the year — it blooms. Fed by winter rain, the washes and rocky slopes fill in with color, and the mild temperatures make it the best hiking window of the year. Peak is usually March into May, and it shifts earlier or later depending on how wet the winter was.
Where to see the blooms
Snow Canyon State Park is the most reliable spot. The Lava Tube Trail, a 2.3-mile out-and-back through an old lava field, runs past fiddleneck, lupine, penstemon, sego lily, primrose, and purple sage by May. Nearby, the short and easy Jenny's Canyon and Johnson Canyon trails are good for families who want flowers without a long walk.
Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, just north of town, comes alive with desert marigold, globemallow, and scarlet paintbrush. The Red Reef Trail is the popular pick here — a moderate hike through red rock and a seasonal stream, with wildflowers framing the whole thing.

Wildflower blooms are notoriously hard to schedule. A wet winter can push a big show; a dry one can mean a thin year. The safest approach is to watch local trail reports in late February and March, then go the moment things start opening up — the peak rarely lasts more than a couple of weeks at any one elevation. Go early in the day for the best light and the coolest temperatures, and stay on the trail; desert soil and young plants are fragile and slow to recover.
