The Subway: Zion's Iconic Canyoneering Hike

The Subway is one of Zion's most sought-after adventures — a tube-shaped slot in the Left Fork of North Creek, with glowing green pools and sculpted rock. It's about an hour from St. George, but it takes planning.

Two ways to do it

• Bottom-up: a non-technical (but strenuous) ~4-mile-each-way route up the creek — wading, boulder-hopping, and route-finding, no ropes required; most groups take 6–10 hours
• Top-down: a technical canyoneering route requiring rappels, swims, and experience

You need a permit. Both directions use the same permit, issued by a lottery (a seasonal lottery months ahead, plus a daily lottery two days before). Apply through Recreation.gov and check current fees and quotas.

Know before you go

• It's off-trail and demanding — good fitness, sturdy shoes, and navigation skills are a must
• Flash-flood risk is serious; check the forecast and never enter if storms threaten
• Start early; it's a long day

Tips: the bottom-up route is the accessible option for fit hikers who don't do ropes — but respect the effort and the permit system. One of the most memorable days in Zion.
