Those are straight-line distances, so allow more by road — the valley is cut up by washes and ridges, and very little of it runs in a straight line.

Three worth a closer look

Garages. In this market garages are as often used for storage and shade as for the car. If you are bringing bikes, a kayak or anything else that lives outdoors here, that space is worth more than the square footage suggests.

Lifts. These narrow a real problem in a market with a lot of three-storey walk-ups. If stairs are a consideration for you or for anyone who will visit often, confirm that the specific building you would live in is served.

Accessible units. Accessibility varies a great deal between properties and even between buildings on one site, so confirm the specifics — parking, entry, doorway widths and bathroom layout — for the actual home rather than for the community.

Applications and screening

Expect a credit and background check, proof of income, and rental history. Two things worth knowing in this market: application fees are generally not refundable even if you are declined, and a great deal of Washington County's stock turns over on the same few weeks of the calendar, so applying with your documents already assembled is a real advantage.
