The canyon
Water Canyon cuts steeply into the south side of Canaan Mountain above Hildale, and unlike most slots in this part of Utah it carries a permanent stream. That water is what makes it: waterfalls, clear pools and narrow passages within a short walk of the trailhead.
The hike
Reaching the first section of flowing canyon is roughly 4.25 miles round trip with about 500 feet of climbing. Many people go as far as the waterfall at the end of the slot and turn back, which is the easy and rewarding version. Continuing up onto Canaan Mountain is a much longer and steeper proposition.
Getting there
From State Route 59, turn east in Hildale onto Utah Avenue and follow it 2.1 miles until it becomes Canyon Street. Continue about eight-tenths of a mile as the street bends north, then turn east and follow the dirt road north a further 1.8 miles. The trailhead is a large dirt area by Water Canyon Reservoir.
Practical
No permit and no fee. There is a vault toilet at the trailhead and no drinking water, so carry your own. Autumn is the pick of the seasons here. Expect to get your feet wet, and treat any narrow section as off-limits if storms are anywhere in the forecast.
