What it covers
Most visitors arrive at Zion for the geology and leave without the human story. This museum, a short way inside the south entrance above Springdale, fills that in: permanent exhibits on the peoples who occupied the canyon and the surrounding plateau over time, from Ancestral Puebloans and Southern Paiute through Mormon pioneer settlement. Rotating exhibits show work by regional artists.
A 22-minute orientation film runs every half hour and is the fastest way to make sense of the park before heading up the canyon.
Practical
There is a bookstore, and admission is covered by the park entrance fee — there is no separate charge. Opening times are seasonal; check the park's current schedule.
The terrace outside is one of the better places in the park to photograph the Towers of the Virgin, particularly at sunrise.
Fitting it in
The Zion Canyon shuttle stops here, so it works as a first or last stop without moving the car. Half an hour covers the exhibits; an hour if you watch the film.
