Most visitors need a car

There is no practical way to see this region without one. Zion, Snow Canyon, Sand Hollow, Quail Creek and the public land in between are spread across a wide area with limited public transport, and a great many visitors arrive through Las Vegas and drive up. Rental demand tracks the visitor calendar closely — the National Park Service reports that 65% of Zion's visitors arrive between April and September, and rental supply in spring and autumn tightens accordingly.

Choosing the vehicle

For paved touring, an ordinary car is entirely sufficient. The main routes to Zion, Snow Canyon and the state parks are all sealed, and there is no need for anything larger.

For unpaved roads, think carefully. Many of the more interesting places in this region sit at the end of dirt or sand roads, and conditions vary with recent weather. High clearance matters more than four-wheel drive for most of them. Critically, standard rental agreements frequently prohibit driving on unpaved roads, which can void coverage entirely — check the contract rather than assuming, because an incident on a road you were not permitted to use is an expensive discovery.

For summer, air conditioning is not negotiable and the vehicle's condition matters. In a climate where highs average near 102°F, a marginal system is a real problem.

Practical points

• Check the spare and the jack before leaving the lot. Distances here are long and services sparse.
• Carry water in the vehicle, more than you think you need. A breakdown in summer on a rural highway is a medical situation, not just an inconvenience.
• Check the tire condition, including the spare.
• Confirm one-way terms if you are collecting in Las Vegas and returning elsewhere.
• Download offline maps. Mobile coverage is patchy outside town.
