The seasonal resident problem

Read the contract carefully

This industry is contract-driven, and the contract is where the problems are. Establish the term length, what happens at renewal, whether it auto-renews and on what notice, whether the equipment is owned or leased, and — critically — whether the system will work with a different monitoring provider if you leave. Proprietary equipment that becomes useless when you change company is a common and expensive surprise.
