Why does a bumper repair need a sensor calibration?
Because the bumper is where the sensors are. Forward radar, parking sensors and often blind-spot units are mounted in or immediately behind the bumper structure, and removing and refitting it moves them. Aim errors that are invisible at the vehicle become large at the distances the system is actually judging.
How can I tell whether calibration was carried out?
Ask for it in writing. A shop that has done the work will have a record naming the systems calibrated and the procedure followed, generated by the equipment. Warning lights are not a reliable check — many systems will operate, and operate incorrectly, without flagging a fault.
