Superior Auto Body and Paint works from Industrial Road, in the light-industrial pocket south of the old town grid where most of the city's body shops, fabricators and trade suppliers ended up. Its work is collision repair, painting and refinishing — the last of which is the part that decides whether a repair reads as a repair for the rest of the vehicle's life.

The wider picture

Automotive paint has been a layered system rather than a single coating for decades, and understanding the layers explains how cars fail here. Primer handles adhesion and corrosion protection. The base coat carries the color and almost nothing else — it is thin, matte and has no meaningful durability on its own. The clear coat on top provides the gloss, the depth and, critically, the ultraviolet absorbers that protect everything beneath it. Those absorbers are consumed. They are used up faster by intense, direct, high-elevation sunlight than by anything else, which is why cars in southern Utah fail from the top down in a recognisable order: roof first, then hood and trunk lid, while the vertical panels still look presentable. Once the clear has gone chalky and started to lift, there is nothing left to polish — the layer that would take the polish is the layer that failed, and the panel has to be refinished.
