Burt Brothers Tire & Service is a Utah-based chain with a store on West Sunset Boulevard, carrying the major tire brands and running a service side that covers alignment, oil changes, brakes and general repair. Sunset Boulevard is where a good deal of the city's retail automotive trade has concentrated, which makes comparison easy and puts several of the alternatives within sight of each other.

How it works

Tire pressure is a temperature measurement as much as a maintenance item, and the relationship is roughly one pound per square inch for every ten degrees the air temperature changes. Two consequences follow, and both are local. The first cold morning of the year sets off pressure warnings across the whole valley on tires that were perfectly fine in October — nothing has leaked, the air has simply contracted. And a tire set to pressure on a hundred-and-ten-degree afternoon is underinflated the next morning. Underinflation is what actually destroys tires: a soft sidewall flexes further with every revolution, flexing rubber generates heat, and heat is what causes a blowout on hot pavement at speed. Pressure is checked cold, before driving, against the placard inside the driver door — not the number molded into the sidewall, which is a maximum the tire can contain rather than a recommendation for the vehicle.
