The Black Ridge — the dark basalt shelf the restaurant sits on — is a lava flow that spilled across the valley and then resisted the erosion that carved away the softer red sandstone around it, which is why it stands above the city as a flat-topped bluff. The view from that elevation takes in the whole St. George basin to the Pine Valley Mountains. Best of State is a Utah awards program judged annually by category, which is why the years attach to it.
