Dixie Pest Control handles pest control across the St. George area. Of everything on a Southern Utah pest list, scorpions are the one that most alarms people new to the region, and they are also the one where the standard response works least well and understanding the animal works best.

Context

Scorpions are nocturnal predators that spend daylight hours pressed into a tight crevice, and their bodies are built for exactly that: flat, hard and able to fit through a gap far narrower than they look. The gaps around a house here are numerous - the hollow cores and weep holes of a block wall, the space under a garage door, expansion joints, the underside of stacked flagstone, a woodpile, an irrigation valve box. They also have an unusual property that turns out to be extremely practical, which is that their exoskeleton fluoresces under ultraviolet light. A handheld blacklight walked around a yard after dark will show them glowing pale green when nothing is visible under a flashlight, and it is how professionals survey a property.

The reason spraying alone disappoints is that a scorpion's hard shell and its habit of walking on the tips of its legs mean it picks up far less residual insecticide than a soft-bodied insect does. What actually reduces the population is removing what it needs. Scorpions follow their prey, so a house with a crickets and roach problem has a scorpion problem waiting; clearing harborage - woodpiles, loose rock against the house, stacked material, dense ground cover next to a foundation - takes away the daytime refuge; and sealing entry points keeps the ones outside from becoming the ones inside.
