Household hazardous waste is the main category, and it is broader than the name suggests: paint and solvents, pesticides and pool chemicals, motor oil and antifreeze, fluorescent tubes and compact bulbs containing mercury, and batteries of most chemistries. These are handled through designated collection facilities and events rather than mixed into general waste, because they contaminate a landfill cell and, in the case of lithium batteries, start fires in collection trucks and transfer stations with some regularity.

A reputable hauler either handles that step or routes the appliance to somewhere that does. Tires are excluded from most landfills and go to a dedicated recycler. Electronics are increasingly diverted for the metals in them. And medical sharps, ammunition and propane cylinders are refused outright by essentially every hauler. Asking before the truck arrives saves a wasted trip, since the alternative is the crew leaving the item where it stands.
