The Utah connection is genuine and not widely known: Pete Harman's café in South Salt Lake took the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in 1952, after Harman met Harland Sanders at a restaurant convention. It was a sign painter working on Harman's building who suggested 'Kentucky fried' over 'Southern fried', on the grounds that Kentucky sounded more distinctive in Utah — and the name went national from there.
