How it works
A conventional softener works by ion exchange. Water passes through a bed of resin beads carrying sodium ions; the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness are attracted to the resin and swap places with the sodium, so the water leaving is soft. The resin eventually fills with hardness minerals and is regenerated by flushing it with concentrated brine, which strips them off and sends them to the drain — which is why a softener needs a salt supply at all.
