The distinction between the windshield and the rest of the glass in a vehicle is bigger than most owners realize, and it explains why some damage can be repaired and some cannot.

How it works

A windshield is laminated: two thin sheets of glass bonded either side of a plastic interlayer. That construction is why it stars and cracks instead of disintegrating, why it holds together and stays in the aperture during a collision, and why it is treated as a structural component — the roof relies on it for a significant share of its strength in a rollover, and the passenger airbag deploys upward against it and needs it to be there. Side and rear glass is normally tempered instead: heat-treated so the surface is in compression, which makes it strong until it fails and then makes it break all at once into blunt granules. That is deliberate, and it is also why a side window can never be repaired — there is nothing left to repair. It is the same reasoning behind the safe drive-away time quoted after a windshield replacement: until the urethane adhesive has reached the strength its manufacturer specifies, the glass is not yet doing its structural job.
