How it works
A refrigerator does not make cold. It moves heat from inside the cabinet to the room, and the hotter the room, the harder that is. Manufacturers rate appliances for an ambient temperature range, and a standard refrigerator is typically specified to somewhere near the mid-90s Fahrenheit at the top end. A closed garage in this valley spends much of the summer well above that. The compressor then runs at close to a continuous duty cycle, which raises head pressure and shortens its life, and the freezer compartment can still lose ground because the system has run out of capacity.
The opposite failure appears in winter with older single-compressor designs. In those, one thermostat in the fresh food compartment controls cooling for both sections. If the garage drops to the forties, the fresh food side is satisfied, the compressor stops running, and the freezer thaws in a cold room. Appliances sold as garage-ready address both ends with a heater or a separate control. The other garage factor is dust: airborne silt settles on the condenser coil, and a coil under a blanket of it cannot reject heat, which produces exactly the same overworked compressor as an over-hot room.
