How it works

Window film comes in three broadly different constructions, and the differences are worth understanding before choosing by darkness. Dyed film blocks light by absorbing it, and the dye itself is degraded by ultraviolet exposure — which is why old tint turns purple and then bubbles, and why the desert reaches that point faster than anywhere else. Metallized film reflects heat effectively using an embedded metal layer, but that layer is conductive and can attenuate radio, satellite navigation, tire-pressure sensor and keyless-entry signals passing through the glass. Ceramic film uses non-conductive ceramic particles chosen to reject infrared while passing visible light, so it rejects heat without going dark, without reflecting, and without interfering with anything. In a market where the point of the film is heat rather than privacy, that is why it has become the default recommendation.
