St. George's Cleanest Carpets cleans carpet across the St. George area. The trade runs on two broad methods that work on genuinely different principles, and which one suits a job depends more on the carpet and the soil in it than on preference.

How it works

Hot water extraction, usually called steam cleaning although no steam is involved, injects heated water and detergent into the pile under pressure and immediately vacuums it back out. Its advantage is depth: the solution reaches the base of the pile and the backing, and the vacuum recovery removes suspended soil along with the water. Its risk is over-wetting. Put more water in than the machine can pull back out and the excess soaks into the backing and the pad, where it can take days to dry, and a wet pad is where odor, delamination and mold problems start.

Low-moisture methods use a fraction of the water. Encapsulation applies a polymer detergent that surrounds soil particles and dries to a brittle crystal, which is then removed by vacuuming over the following days; bonnet cleaning works an absorbent pad across the surface. Both dry quickly and neither reaches deep into the pile, which makes them well suited to maintenance cleaning of commercial carpet and to interim cleaning between deeper ones. The order of operations matters more than the method: dry vacuuming before any wet work removes the loose particulate that would otherwise turn to mud, and in this valley that dry step removes a great deal more than it does elsewhere.
