The Season's Last Race

The Utah High School Cycling League closes its fall season at Desert Color Trail Park in St. George on October 23-24, 2026, the state championship's first year at this venue. The league is a nonprofit affiliate of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), organized in 2011 and racing its first season in 2012 with roughly 300 riders. It became the largest first-year league in NICA history, grew into NICA's largest league nationally by 2014, and has stayed there since: more than 7,600 student-athletes raced leaguewide in 2024, and the league's own count still puts it as the biggest high school mountain bike program in the country. Desert Color Trail Park was built to NICA racecourse standards specifically so it could host events like this one.

How a Season Becomes a Championship

Utah's league splits into six regions, grouped mainly by school population, and each region races four regional events through the fall - three regions on a given weekend, the other three the next, trading off until the season ends. Every rider drops their worst finish of the four regional races, and the average of their best three determines who advances. That means every team lining up at Desert Color has already survived most of a season; the state championship decides who is fastest, not who simply shows up.

Categories on the Course

Racers compete by grade and gender, but grade alone doesn't set the category. Seventh- and eighth-graders race in the league's Junior Devo program, its introductory tier below high school; NICA racing starts at grade 7, so sixth-graders don't compete in it. High schoolers in grades 9-12 are placed as freshmen, JV, or varsity based on experience and prior results rather than age alone, so a fast sophomore can race varsity while a senior new to the sport starts in JV. Coaches assign the categories, in keeping with the league's stated goal that every rostered rider gets a race suited to where they actually are, not a bench. Riders and families curious what the sport looks like outside of race weekend can start with the Mountain Biking St. George guide, which covers the trail systems teams train on the rest of the year.

Where to Stand and What to Bring

There's no single start gun to watch for. Racing runs in waves by grade, gender, and category across both days, from morning into the afternoon, so a family with riders in more than one category should expect more than one start time. Desert Color Trail Park has a dirt parking lot and a vault toilet but no water source on site, so bring your own - October afternoons in St. George can still run warm, and the desert hiking safety guide's advice on heat and hydration applies to a day spent standing trailside as much as one spent riding. St. George's October weather is usually mild, but the course is built to a written NICA weather policy rather than an ad hoc call, so a wet morning doesn't automatically mean a canceled one.

Not the Same Weekend as Western Regionals

Three weeks after the state championship, the same course hosts the first-ever NICA Western Regional Championship, a separate, larger event drawing teams from ten states rather than one - worth knowing so you don't show up on the wrong October weekend expecting the smaller, all-Utah field.

Planning a Weekend Around It

Desert Color sits close enough to the rest of town that out-of-town families can find a place to stay and grab a meal at one of the area's family-friendly restaurants between waves. For families weighing more than a weekend visit, the Desert Color neighborhood profile covers what's actually built out in the community around the trail park today.

Frequently asked questions

Does every rider on a Utah team get to race at state?

No. Only riders who qualify by their regional-race average make the state championship lineup; teammates who didn't qualify often still travel to Desert Color to support their team, but they aren't on the start list.

Do spectators need a ticket to watch a NICA race?

Yes. There's no admission charge or ticket to spectate at the state championship or at any Utah League race weekend.

What's Junior Devo, and can 6th graders race?

Junior Devo is the league's introductory program for 7th and 8th graders. NICA racing starts at grade 7, so 6th graders aren't part of the interscholastic race program at all, at state or during the regular season.

Is this the same event as the NICA Western Regionals?

No. This weekend is Utah's own season finale for Utah teams. The Western Regional Championship, held at the same course a few weeks later, is a separate, bigger event with teams from ten states.

Is there water available at Desert Color Trail Park?

No. The venue has a dirt parking lot and a vault toilet but no water source, so plan to bring enough for a full day trailside.

What happens if it rains on race weekend?

NICA's weather policy allows organizers to delay a start, shorten the course, or change lap counts for wet or unsafe conditions, and racing stops immediately if lightning is spotted.

How early should I get there to see my rider's race?

Staging for each wave typically opens about 15 minutes before that category's start time, and the league posts a staging order and start times ahead of race weekend, so check your rider's specific slot rather than planning around one call time for the whole event.
