The Triathlon You Can Actually Start With
Washington County is known for triathlon at the hardest end: the Ironman 70.3 in May is the event most people associate with racing here. The St. George Triathlon in April is the opposite proposition, and it is deliberately built that way.
The swim is in a heated indoor pool. No open water, no wetsuit, no cold shock, and no possibility of being unable to see the buoy. For a great many people that single fact is the difference between entering a triathlon and never entering one.
The Categories
Five ways in, across a wide range of ability:
- Adult Individual Sprint — a 400-meter swim, a 12-mile bike and a 3-mile run
- Adult Sprint Relay — the same course split across a team, with open men's, open women's and mixed divisions
- Adult Beginner — a 200-meter swim, a 6-mile bike and a 1.55-mile run
- Kids Sprint and Kids Beginner — for ages 17 and under
The Beginner category is a genuine beginner distance rather than a slightly shorter sprint, and the relay lets a group split the disciplines so that a strong swimmer who does not run can still take part.
Everything in One Place
The whole event is built around the aquatic center. The bike course loops through St. George neighborhoods and the run is an out-and-back, both returning to the same site, so spectators watch all three disciplines without driving anywhere.
That is unusual and it matters more than it sounds. At most triathlons a family spends the morning in a car chasing one athlete between venues. Here they sit in one place and see the swim, the bike and the run.
A Note on the Name
The Sand Hollow Aquatic Center is in St. George. Sand Hollow Reservoir is out past Hurricane, roughly half an hour away, and visitors drive to the wrong one every year. Set your navigation to the aquatic center by name rather than searching for Sand Hollow, or you will arrive at a lake with no race at it.
April in the Valley
April is close to the last comfortable month for a daytime endurance event here before the heat arrives, and the staggered start times reflect that — the adult sprint goes early, the beginner and children's waves run later in the morning when it is warmer, which suits a pool swim and a short course.
Who It Suits
First-time triathletes, nervous swimmers, families wanting to enter together across categories, and relay teams. If it goes well, the county gives you somewhere obvious to progress to: the same roads carry Ironman 70.3 St. George three weeks later.

Can children enter?
Yes. There are Kids Sprint and Kids Beginner categories for ages 17 and under, running later in the morning than the adult sprint. Between those and the relay, a whole family can enter the same event at different levels.
How does the relay work?
A team splits the three disciplines between them, with open men's, open women's and mixed divisions. It is the way in for someone who is strong at one discipline and unwilling to attempt the others.
Do I have to drive between the swim, bike and run?
