St. George Winter Bird Festival

Southern Utah's mild winters make it one of the best cold-season birding spots in the West, and each late January the St. George Winter Bird Festival brings birders together for three days of guided field trips, workshops, and evening presentations. Based at the Tonaquint Nature Center, field trips fan out to hotspots like Sand Hollow, Quail Creek, Beaver Dam Wash, Lytle Ranch, and the edges of Zion.

  • When: three days in late January
  • Where: Tonaquint Nature Center, St. George (with field trips across the region)
  • Who: organized by the Red Cliffs Audubon Society; all experience levels welcome

With leafless winter trees and hundreds of species in the area, it's prime time to spot desert and wetland birds. Check the festival site for this year's dates and to register for field trips.
