Exploring St. George With Your Dog

St. George is a genuinely dog-friendly town, with warm weather most of the year, miles of open trail, and plenty of parks. Here is how to have a good day out with your dog, and how to keep them safe in the desert.

Dog parks

For off-leash running, Forest Park is the go-to, with a separate small-dog area, shade, water, and room to roam. Desert Dog Oasis adds agility equipment if your dog likes a challenge, and there are smaller neighborhood dog parks scattered around town.

Trails and open space

On a leash, the whole Red Cliffs Desert Reserve opens up, with miles of desert trail right at the edge of town where dogs are welcome. Pioneer Park, the 52-acre red-rock park with Dixie Rock, is a fun scramble with a leashed dog, and Tonaquint Park has grass and space to stretch out.

Patios and shops

Plenty of St. George restaurants have outdoor patios that welcome a well-behaved dog, so you can grab lunch or coffee without leaving them in the car.

Desert-dog safety

Two things matter most here. First, heat: the pavement and slickrock get dangerously hot in summer, so walk at dawn or dusk, test the ground with your hand, and carry water for both of you. Second, the desert has goatheads, cactus, and the occasional snake, so keep an eye on paws and stay on trail. Do those, and St. George is a dog's paradise.
