SunRiver Golf Club

SunRiver Golf Club occupies an unusual position in the local golf economy: it is privately owned
and it is the heart of a gated 55-plus community, but it sells public tee times. That semi-private
arrangement makes it one of the more accessible good rounds in the southwest corner of the valley.

The course

William H. Neff designed it and it opened in 2000. Neff is the same architect behind
Bloomington Country Club, and the family resemblance is
visible: generous landing areas, a preference for strategic bunkering over water, and greens that ask
for the right portion of the surface rather than punishing a miss outright. It plays to a par of 71.

The course has been re-rated across several tee configurations over the years and published figures
vary, so we have left the course and slope ratings off this page rather than print a number we cannot
confirm against the club's own scorecard. Verify the current rating with the pro shop if you are
posting a score.

Who it suits

SunRiver is built for players who intend to play often. The design is fair, the walk is flat by local
standards, and the conditioning is consistent. It is a good fit for retirees, for golfers who want a
relaxed round rather than a test, and for visitors staying on the south end of the city who do not
want to drive across the valley.

The community around it

SunRiver St. George is the only active-adult community in the city built around its own golf course,
and that shapes the atmosphere on the property. The course is not an amenity bolted onto a
subdivision; the neighborhood was planned around the routing, and a large share of the play comes
from residents who walk to the first tee.

The setting

This is the far southwest of the valley, near the Arizona line, on the flats south of the Santa Clara
and Virgin confluence. The country south of here opens toward the Warner Valley, where the
Warner Valley dinosaur track site preserves early
Jurassic footprints in the same sandstone that underlies the golf course.
