The Ledges Golf Club

The Ledges occupies some of the highest golfing ground in the St. George area, on the bench
northwest of the city looking down into Snow Canyon State Park.
Matt Dye designed it and the course opened in 2006. It is public, which matters, because the two
other courses with views of this quality in the valley are both private.

Two very different nines

The front nine is the surprise. It runs over comparatively flat ground in wide corridors and plays in
a links idiom - low running shots work, and the wind on this exposed bench is a real factor. The back
nine is the reason people book. The land breaks up, the elevation changes become severe, and several
holes are routed along the edge of the sandstone ledges that give the course its name.

Holes worth knowing

The 14th is the hole that defines the course: a short par four to a narrow green with a cliffside
dropoff waiting for anything pushed. It is drivable-adjacent and genuinely dangerous, which is a rare
combination. The 15th is the other candidate for signature hole, a drivable par four with a clear
risk-and-reward decision off the tee. The 11th, a par five, is the most scenic of the three.

Who it suits

Despite the drama, The Ledges is not the hardest course in the region. From the Black tees it rates
73.4 with a slope of 128 - long, but forgiving relative to Copper Rock or Coral Canyon, because the
playing corridors are wide and the greens, while quick, are not tricked up. That makes it a good
choice for a group of mixed abilities who still want the spectacular round.

The setting

The course sits on Navajo sandstone above a landscape shaped by both sandstone and old lava flows.
Snow Canyon's black basalt and white and red sandstone are visible from much of the back nine, and
the state park entrance is a short drive down the hill. Rounds here play noticeably cooler than rounds
on the valley floor in the warm months because of the elevation and the exposure.
