48 Hours in St. George: A First-Timer's Weekend
Two days done right: Snow Canyon at sunset, a Zion day, a night at Tuacahn, and the free stuff downtown. A no-burnout first-timer's weekend.
You could spend a week here and not run out of things to do, but most people get a weekend. Here is how I would spend two days without burning out or missing the good stuff.
Friday evening
Land, drop your bags, and head straight to Snow Canyon for the last hour of light. It is ten minutes from town and the sandstone glows at sunset. Walk out to the Petrified Dunes and just sit for a while. Dinner downtown after: George's Corner if you want easy and lively, the Painted Pony if you are marking the occasion.
Saturday
This is your big day, so point it at Zion. It is under an hour up I-15 and Highway 9. Leave early, grab the free shuttle in Springdale, and hike the Narrows or Angels Landing (note: Angels Landing needs a permit now, so sort that out before you come). Back in St. George by late afternoon, clean up, and if it is May through October, get tickets to whatever is playing at Tuacahn. A Broadway musical against 1,500-foot red cliffs is the kind of thing you end up describing to people for years.
Sunday
Slow morning. Wander Ancestor Square and historic downtown, then walk the Red Hills Desert Garden up by Pioneer Park. It is free, it is gorgeous, and there are real dinosaur tracks in it. Climb Dixie Rock for one last look over the valley before you drive out. Just know a lot of restaurants keep short Sunday hours, so plan lunch accordingly.
That is the trip. Swap the Zion day for a round of golf or a Sand Hollow ATV tour if hiking is not your thing, and the bones of the weekend still hold up.
