The climb to Angels Landing is one of the most exhilarating day hikes in the country — a steep ascent to a narrow fin of rock with jaw-dropping views straight down Zion Canyon. It's about an hour from St. George to the park.

The basics

• Distance: ~5.4 miles round trip from the Grotto trailhead
• Elevation gain: ~1,500 feet, including the tight switchbacks of Walter's Wiggles
• The chains: the final half-mile follows a spine of rock with steep drop-offs on both sides, with bolted chains to hold

You need a permit. Since 2022, the chained section requires a permit issued by lottery — a seasonal lottery months ahead and a day-before lottery. Apply through Recreation.gov and check the current rules before you go.

Tips

• Ride the Zion Canyon shuttle to the Grotto stop — private cars aren't allowed on the scenic drive most of the year
• Go early to beat the heat and crowds; summer afternoons are brutally hot
• Uneasy with heights? Scout's Lookout, just before the chains, is a great turnaround with huge views and no permit required
