The Watchman Trail is a moderate hike right by the Zion Visitor Center — no shuttle required — that climbs to a bench with a sweeping view of the town of Springdale, the Watchman peak, and the canyon mouth.
The basics
- Distance: ~3.3 miles round trip
- Elevation gain: ~370 feet, on a well-graded trail
- Trailhead: near the Visitor Center and South Campground, so you can walk to it from the entrance
Tips
- A great sunset hike — the low light sets the cliffs glowing
- Because it doesn't need the shuttle, it's ideal early morning, evening, or in the off-season
- Exposed and hot midday in summer; bring water
- Watch for desert wildlife and spring wildflowers along the way
One of the best moderate hikes you can do without riding into the canyon.
