Free (and Nearly Free) Things to Do in St. George

The best thing about St. George is the landscape, and almost none of it charges admission. Here is what costs nothing.

The scenery, which is the main event

Pioneer Park sits above town on a jumble of red sandstone and lava, with slot-like passages to scramble through, arches, and the best free sunset view in the city. It is genuinely a park you climb around in rather than walk through, and children love it.

Sugarloaf, better known as Dixie Rock, is the landmark formation above town — a short walk for a wide view.

Red Hills Desert Garden is a free botanical garden of desert planting, with a stream and a window onto native fish. Small, shaded and pleasant, and it is the single best place to understand what actually grows here.

Confluence Park and the paved trail network along the rivers are free, flat and good for walking or cycling.

The deep history, also free

Anasazi Valley Petroglyphs is a short hike to a genuinely remarkable panel of rock art — one of the region's most rewarding free outings.

Bloomington Petroglyph Park puts more rock art within reach of a short walk.

Warner Valley Dinosaur Track Site preserves dinosaur tracks in open desert.

The St. George Tabernacle and Brigham Young Winter Home both offer free entry and are the clearest window into why this town exists.

The Washington Cotton Mill is the surviving physical evidence of the Cotton Mission that founded the region.

Free by season

Autumn through spring is when the outdoor free things are at their best — this is the region's patio and trail season, inverted from most of the country.

Summer shifts everything to dawn and dusk. Splash pads and shaded parks carry the middle of the day.

The first Friday of every month, George Streetfest takes over downtown with music, art and market stalls. Walking around it costs nothing.

Things that are nearly free

Snow Canyon State Park charges a modest day-use fee and is worth it — but the trails within it cost nothing beyond entry, and it is the single best outdoor value in the region.

Practical notes

• Water, and plenty of it. Free outings in a desert still require preparation.
• Utah has the highest melanoma rate in the United States — roughly 46 cases per 100,000 against a national figure near 25 — so sun protection here is ordinary equipment rather than caution.
• Sturdy shoes for petroglyph trails and Pioneer Park's rock.
• Rock art is fragile and protected. Look, photograph, and never touch or chalk it — skin oils damage the panels permanently.
• Watch for flash flooding in late summer, particularly on any trail that uses a wash.
