The Snow Canyon Overlook via the Red Mountain Trail

For a bird's-eye view down into Snow Canyon — instead of up at its walls — hike the Red Mountain Trail to the Snow Canyon Overlook, on the high plateau above the park near Ivins.

The hike

• Distance: about 4.5 miles round trip to the overlook, with ~400 feet of gain — rated easy, though the deep sand near the end makes you work
• The payoff: a spectacular view over the north end of Snow Canyon's red-and-white sandstone from above
• The trail winds through desert junipers on a rock-studded, then sandy, path

Know before you go

• The trailhead is up on the Red Mountain Wilderness side (the drive there passes through Snow Canyon) — a different experience than hiking on the canyon floor
• Continuing past the overlook leads onto the full Red Mountain Trail (12+ miles) — a serious all-day route; most people just do the overlook
• No shade or water — carry plenty and go early

Tips: sunset light on the canyon below is unforgettable, but bring a headlamp if you stay for it. One of the best big-view payoffs for moderate effort in the area.
