Seeing a Show at Tuacahn

If you do only one nice evening on your St. George trip, make it Tuacahn. It is an outdoor amphitheater about fifteen minutes out in Ivins, set into the mouth of Padre Canyon with 1,500-foot red walls rising right behind the stage. They stage full Broadway musicals out there, and I mean full: live animals, pyrotechnics, and on the right show an actual flash-flood effect that sends water across the set.

What to know before you go

• The season runs May through October for the big musicals, with Christmas shows in the winter. Popular titles sell out, so book ahead.
• It is outdoors. Desert evenings cool off fast, so bring a layer even in summer; you will want it by intermission.
• Come early. The canyon setting is half the experience. Get there before dusk, walk around, and watch the cliffs go deep red as the sun drops.
• Getting there is an easy fifteen-minute drive from St. George, or a few minutes past Snow Canyon. Parking is on-site.

It is the rare thing that is genuinely worth the ticket for locals and visitors alike. Even people who swear they do not like musicals tend to walk out grinning.
