Why the light is so good here
Two reasons, and knowing them helps you plan.
The rock is red, and red sandstone under warm low light saturates in a way grey rock does not.
The air is exceptionally dry and clear, which keeps colour and contrast where humidity would soften them.
The consequence: the last thirty minutes before sunset and the twenty after it are both worth staying for. The afterglow here is frequently better than the sunset itself, and most people leave too early.
In the city
Pioneer Park is the classic — elevated red rock above town looking west, free, five minutes from downtown, and the best sunset in the city.
The Red Hills Parkway overlooks give the wide view of St. George against the cliffs.
Sugarloaf, or Dixie Rock, is the landmark itself and a short walk.
Just outside
Snow Canyon, fifteen minutes away, is transformed by late light, and the Petrified Dunes in particular are at their best then — the low sun rakes across the cross-bedding and picks out every line.
The Red Mountain overlook looks down over the whole park, and is the most dramatic option for anyone willing to walk for it.
Toward Ivins and Kayenta, the western horizon and the low desert architecture make a different kind of evening.

- Arrive early. The good spots fill, particularly at weekends, and you want time to settle rather than scramble.
- Stay after the sun has gone. The afterglow is the part most visitors miss.
- Bring a layer. The desert loses heat extraordinarily fast once the sun is down, in every season.
- Take a torch. Walking back over slickrock or lava in the dark without one is how ankles get broken.
- The rock stays hot in summer long after the air cools, which is pleasant to sit on in winter and unpleasant in July.
Turning it into a longer evening
Sunset pairs naturally with dinner downtown, with a performance at Tuacahn in Ivins, and — if you stay out — with stargazing, since several of these viewpoints are also the closest dark skies to town.
