Veyo Pool

Veyo Pool is an unusual combination: a spring-fed swimming pool in a small volcanic canyon, attached to a private climbing area with hundreds of bolted routes.

The pool

Fed by a natural spring in the canyon, this is an old-fashioned outdoor swimming spot rather than a modern facility — and that is precisely its charm. It has been a local summer institution for generations.

The setting is the appeal: basalt walls, cottonwoods and water, in country that is otherwise dry.

Crawdad Canyon: climbing on private land

The adjoining canyon holds a substantial concentration of bolted sport routes on basalt, on private property with paid access.

That private status is the interesting part. It means:

• Access is by admission rather than free, and it is managed.
• Beginners are genuinely welcome — the routes span a wide range of grades and the setting is contained and unintimidating, which makes it one of the friendliest places in the region to start.
• The rock is basalt, not the sandstone that dominates local climbing — different movement, different holds, and it stays climbable when sandstone is off limits after rain.

It is seasonal

Both the pool and the canyon operate on a seasonal schedule, and it is not a year-round destination. Opening arrangements, admission and hours change, so check current details before driving out.

Why the location is pleasant

Veyo sits north of St. George at higher elevation, which makes it noticeably cooler than the valley — part of why a summer swimming spot ended up here.

The drive out passes through the volcanic country around Veyo and Diamond Valley, which is worth the trip in its own right, and it continues toward Gunlock and Pine Valley.

Practical

• About half an hour from St. George.
• Check the season and opening arrangements before travelling — this is the single most common wasted trip here.
• Bring your own kit for climbing; this is not a gym.
