Rosenbruch Wildlife Museum

A world of wildlife under one roof

The Rosenbruch Wildlife Museum presents wildlife from around the globe in walk-through habitat displays, moving visitors between re-created environments from different continents. It is one of the few large indoor attractions in the St. George area, which makes it a reliable option in high summer or bad weather.

The habitat diorama

The form on display here has a real history. The habitat diorama — an animal mounted in a faithful reconstruction of its own environment, against a painted background blending into a modeled foreground — was developed at the turn of the twentieth century, largely through the work of the taxidermist Carl Akeley at the American Museum of Natural History. Before that, museums showed specimens in rows of glass cases with no context at all.

The change mattered more than it sounds. A diorama makes an argument about relationships: what an animal eats, what country it occupies, what else lives alongside it. It is the reason natural history museums feel like journeys rather than catalogs, and it is why these displays are built as a route rather than a room.

Visiting

The museum is at 1835 Convention Center Drive in St. George, beside the convention center, with parking on site. There is a gift shop, and annual memberships are available. It is an indoor, family-oriented stop that most visitors cover comfortably in an hour or two. Check current opening times and admission with the museum before traveling.
