St. George Musical Theater

The company

St. George Musical Theater is a community theater company producing full-scale Broadway-style musicals in southern Utah. Casts and crews are drawn largely from local performers and volunteers, which is the defining feature of the form rather than a limitation of it.

What community theater actually is

The distinction is worth drawing. A professional company pays its performers and must fill seats to meet payroll; a community company is built on unpaid participation, and its purpose is partly the participation itself. That changes what can be programmed — large-cast musicals are prohibitively expensive professionally but entirely feasible when the chorus is volunteering — and it explains why a city the size of St. George can support ambitious musical theater at all.

The move

For years the company performed in the historic St. George Opera House, an intimate room seating around 125. It has since relocated to a larger purpose-built venue on South Main Street with expanded seating and modern stage technology. The jump from a 125-seat house to a purpose-built one is a significant one for a volunteer company: it widens what is stageable, and it raises what must be sold.
