The rules are not optional, and visitors miss them
This is the part rental customers most often do not know, and it is worth getting right before you arrive.
Non-residents must buy a Utah non-resident OHV permit. The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation sets the fee and states that the permit is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase and must be purchased online. You will need to provide proof of out-of-state residency and that the vehicle is not owned by a Utah resident. A permit is required for each machine brought into the state.
Education certificates apply by age. Utah requires that operators under 18 hold a youth OHV education certificate to operate on public land, roads or trails. Operators 18 and over may operate if they hold an approved adult OHV education certificate.
If you are renting rather than bringing your own machine, ask the rental company exactly which of these they handle and which remain your responsibility. Assume nothing — the requirements attach to the operator as well as to the vehicle.
Riding in this climate
Heat is the hazard people underestimate. July highs here average near 102°F, and riding gear plus sun plus exertion adds up quickly. Carry far more water than feels necessary, start early, and tell someone your route. Sand and slickrock are also unforgiving of inexperience — if you have not ridden dunes before, say so, and take the orientation seriously.
