Single and tandem kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and larger party boards are rented inside Quail Creek and Gunlock state parks, which is the distinction worth noting — renting within the park rather than outside it removes the tow and the launch entirely. Quail Creek's reservoir is notably warm for the region; Gunlock, north-west of St. George, is quieter and better known for the waterfalls that run in a wet spring.

The wider picture

Gunlock and Quail Creek are both state park reservoirs but they behave nothing alike. Quail Creek is a deep, warm impoundment beside the interstate; Gunlock sits north-west of St. George on the Santa Clara River and is much quieter, drawing crowds mainly in the wet springs when water spills over the slickrock in a series of falls. Paddle sports suit both because neither is large enough for the wind to build much of a chop.
