Hurricane is the easternmost city in the St. George metro, about 20 minutes (15–20 miles) east of St. George at an elevation of roughly 3,260 feet, next to La Verkin, Toquerville, and Virgin. It sits on the Hurricane Bench along State Route 9 — the main corridor to Zion National Park — and has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the region, with a population of about 20,036 at the 2020 census and rapid growth since. It mixes an established downtown grid with fast-expanding new subdivisions, and is generally a lower-cost, recreation-oriented alternative to St. George proper.
History & heritage
The town owes its existence to the Hurricane Canal. Organized in 1893 and hand-dug over roughly eleven years through cliff and rock, the ~7.5-mile canal first carried Virgin River water onto the dry Hurricane Bench on August 6, 1904, opening about 2,000 acres to settlement; it stayed in use until 1985. The townsite was platted in 1896 and pioneer families moved onto the bench around 1906, with Hurricane incorporating in 1912. The name comes from Hurricane Hill — as the story goes, a whirlwind tore the top off apostle Erastus Snow's buggy, prompting him to remark "that was a hurricane." That heritage is preserved today at the Hurricane Valley Pioneer Heritage Park and Museum and the 1906 Bradshaw House, the town's first permanent home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
