Background
Zion's guiding industry exists in the shape it does because of one regulatory fact: technical canyoneering inside the park requires a permit, and the routes are unforgiving of inexperience, so guided trips are how most visitors access them at all. The Narrows is the exception people misunderstand — the bottom-up walk from the Temple of Sinawava needs no permit, while the full sixteen-mile top-down route does.
